'A condition in which one type of situation evokes the sense of another, as when the hearing of a sound produces the visualisation of a colour'
Narrative
- In the songs the narrative rarely is complete and therefore often fragmentary.
- Fragmentary narratives may help the repeatability of promos
Three Types of Music Video (as suggested by Andrew Goodwin):
- Illustration: the promo basically illustrates the ideas/narrative in the song lyrics
- Amplification: uses a key idea/image from the lyrics and develops it into a concept with the promo. A link remains between the lyric and the promo
- Disjuncture: the promo bears no resemblance to the lyric or its meaning; abstract; often seen as unconventional/'arty' videos; creates a new range of meanings for the song
Examples of Illustrative Music Promos
This is an illustrative video because it shows clearly the story that is described in the song. It is all about an obsessed fan of Eminem's and the letters he writes to him. It ends with the fan driving off the side of a bridge and Eminem writing a reply to him. The events shown are exactly what is spoken about in the lyrics. This type of video may be favourable because it clearly shows what the song is about with no questions about a deeper meaning.

Examples of an Amplification Music Promo
This is an amplified video as it focuses on one line of the song 'I'm going back to the start'. The whole video is in reverse and rewinds back to a car crash that occurred, thus we see all of the events following it and some of the time before. It is not illustrative because it does not follow all of the luyrics and it is not disjunctive because it is still linked to the song. This type of video might be successful as it still links with the song but it is an imaginitive way to show it.
Other Examples
Examples of Disjunctive Music Promos
This video is disjunctive as it appears to be entirely irrelevant to the song and the lyrics. It features one close up of the frontman of Radiohead, Thom Yorke, which lasts for the entire song. His head is in some sort of glass bowl and gradually fills up with water. This does not seem to link to any of the lyrics of the song. Some people enjoy this type of video because it is quite interesting to watch and is unexpected as opposed to seeing a video that spells out everything for you.

Mia, there is some great work on analysis of music video - in lots of detail and using several videos. Most work is present and correct though there could be more done on the basics (conventions, what makes a promo etc). Continue to post up all of your work related to the planning of the preliminary task - I can't wait to see the finished result!
